• With regard to ‘The British never say they have a two-week vacation” actually we’d say “we’re going on holidays for a fortnight”, or more likely “we’re taking two week’s holiday ” or even “we’re taking two weeks’ hols”. yep the use of the word “holiday” is quite different. When in the US, you get asked what your favourite holiday is. ( They mean Valentines Day or Halloween etc, but I think of the 3 week holiday I had in Bhutan!)
• I spent 9 days in London last fall and barely missed a beat, although I had heard many of these linguistic differences beforehand. One you missed: “lift” is a elevator. I did enjoy the lexical differences – and the various accents, although we have those too at home.
• Sometimes when conversing with a local in Louisiana or Alabama, I wondered which country I was in and what language they were speaking. when I first moved to Virginia I barely could understand anyone over the phone. I got better but still have trouble understanding people in southwest Virginia.

Thank you Rick! Reading this put a huge smile on my face. My two year old is obsessed with Peppa Pig (especially the London episode) and I can’t wait to share this part of the world with her! I’ve been living in England for a year and at first I couldn’t understand why people kept asking if I was alright, like something was wrong with me. Then I realized “are you alright?” is British for “how are you doing?” and I felt much better.

I love this family! Wonderful to see our President and grandchildren together like this. You just see the love they have for each other. Thanks Ivanka , it was so refreshing to see how a powerhouse of a man can also show himself being a very loving grandfather having a moment with his sweet grandchildren. Priceless!
