We (my former Pharm/nursing fundamentals teacher and 3 class mates) got a tattoo on our pinky that says promise. We promised we would finish nursing school and she would get her BSN. I got mine on the inside. So it’s really not visible. I’m from Nova Scotia Canada, way back when I graduated the caps were being phased out. Licensed Practical Nurses, (then Certified Nursing Assistants), in NS were designated from the RNs by the blue band on our caps, (RNs wore a black band) This is my Nova Scotia Canadian nurse tat! My Army Pin up nurse. This represents not only me, but I incorporated my grandfathers retirement rank on the cap. This also is for my grandma who is also a nurse. I’m a US Army Reservist who is also a civilian nurse. An owl to remind me of everyone I’ve cared for at the end of life stage. There is nothing like holding a man’s hand as he takes his last breath, or hugging someone who just lost their mother. It reminds me to have empathy for all, always. This is my cancer ribbon (carcinoid cancer) and I wanted to include nursing in with it so we did a stethoscope, I included nursing for two reasons, #1 because I had amazing nurses while fighting my cancer and #2 I became a nursing assistant. I have several tattoos one being the nursing cross and RN which I got after I passed my boards but then I went on to get my NP and when I graduated I got the infinity symbol in multiple colors for cancer awareness and it says “live, love, hope, & heal”. It wasn’t until I opened my own clinic though that I got a tattoo that was visible when I am at work and it is my favorite. Each bird symbolizes my husband and my children. 5 years after I beat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I got a shoulder piece to commemorate my remission. I’ll show it to an oncology patient every so often, if they’re really down and I think it could help them.
