However, what I don’t like about bearded dragons is their fickle diet. Adult dragons need a lot of salad, but also bugs, and even though I have both on hand as I have both insectivorous and herbivorous reptiles, having one animal that needs both can be a bit of a pain. Remembering when they last got bugs, how many of which kind they got each time, and also which veg/greens/fruit each individual will eat (because they’re much pickier,

  • in my experience, with plant matter than a fully herbivorous reptile) than it would be with an animal that only eats either of the two. If your record keeping is better than mine, this might not be an issue, but I have a lot of animals and don’t tend to keep close track of my daily eaters on paper (or phone app).
  • Leos, on top of only eating bugs, don’t need as specific of basking temperatures and uvb amounts (although I suggest providing uvb for Leos as well). These factors alone make them a bit easier than bearded dragons.
  • However, I’d suggest that you consider a third option: blue tongued skinks. A captive bred Northern will be as friendly and interactive as a bearded dragon, with the ease of heat and uvb requirements that a leo has. Their diet is literally some canned dog food once a week. They’re much easier than bearded dragons with all the bearded dragon personality that people love!

They’re more expensive, but really great, and really underrated in the European/American pet trade. I’d urge you to look them up and consider whether they’re a better first reptile for you.

I’ll have to look into them, I’d definitely want something that i would be able to give a great home for my experience level and would want to do lots of research first. I do a multi food diet for Nigel so i wouldn’t mind that as much although it seems they sound a bit more picky than him.

I think lighting and space is what I’m most worried about since Nigel is cold water and doesn’t even need a heater so i don’t have much knowledge on that aspect/ basking etc. I’m fine with derpy bois, do any of them tend to be more nippy than others? I’d prefer kind of a more laid back dude who would just kind of chill when being handled
