The second row consists of 2 locks or two strikers (forward). Lock is usually the tallest player in the team and has the primary task of jumping on and off when the line-out. Locking in line-out is often assisted by other strikers to catch the ball from a teammate’s pitch or ensure that the ball is under home control. Lock also plays an important role in scrum when he is right behind the three players in the front row and creates thrust for the teammates in front.

The back row is the bottom row of the strikers, also known as loose forward.  The 3 players in the back row are 2 flankers and 1 player number 8. The two flankers, the blindside flanker and the openside flanker, are the two players in the last row in the scrum. They are the players who move the most in the match. Their main role is to gain control of the ball through ‘turn over’. Player number 8 is the one who inserts between 2 players lock in a scrum situation. The role of the number 8 in the scrum is to control the ball after teammates above push the ball back and create a bond between the striker and defender during attacks.
