Some have argued that the German Shepherd Dog has a reputation for biting and for that reason is prohibited in some places. However, the German Shepherd Dog is one of the five most popular dog breeds in America, and the dogs are thoughtfully trained and acquainted with someone who has a reputation for being safe. In the US, it has been reported that German Shepherds tend to bite more often than other breeds, and perhaps attack smaller breeds. A 1999 Australian report showing that the German Shepherd Dog is the third most biting breed in some locations in Australia. However, a 24-year study in the US found that German Shepherd Dogs do not dominate human attacks in the US.
