This is the largest species of the Cat Bear family (Procyonidae). This species has a body 40–70 cm long and weighs 3.5–9 kg. They are nocturnal, they are predominantly carnivorous, with a diet consisting of about 40% invertebrates, 33% plant food and 27% vertebrate. The coat is gray in color, of which nearly 90% is a dense undercoat, isolated against cold weather.
Its two most distinctive features are its extremely ingenious fore-paws and its facial masks, which are the themes in mythology of several American Indian tribes. Raccoons are noted for intelligence, with studies showing that they can remember ways to perform tasks up to three years later.
