As of July 2019, more than 670 American soldiers’ remains lost in the war were returned to the US, more than 1,580 people have not been found, according to VVA. In contrast, VVA provided more than 300 files, assisting Vietnam in finding out a total of about 15,000 missing people.
Finding missing American soldiers in Vietnam is getting more and more difficult as locations that were once battlefields change. Vietnam builds many bridges, roads and other infrastructures to serve socio-economic development. American veterans also gradually died due to their advanced age. Coates said that in the next five years, VVA will mainly rely on documents from American families to find information about missing soldiers.
