General Dynamics F-16XL, 1982. The replacement of the General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark required an aircraft with strong support for firepower. The F-16 was used as a base, but with a modified wing shape to be able to carry more weapons and remain stable at high speeds. Unfortunately, the F-16XL cannot compete with twin-engine heavy fighters.

Boeing X-32A / B, 2000. Considered to be one of the joint fighter competition with Lockheed’s X-35. The X-32 is presented in two types: the base model and the short take-off model – a vertical landing. But the X-32’s opponents could switch between different takeoff and landing modes at any time, so the X-32 project was forced to cancel.
