We were in Colmar for a day but were so excited to walk through the beautiful town and eat the wonderful food, that we didn’t make it to the museum! Unusual for us, and it’s a regret I’ve had. That means I just need to put Colmar back on the itinerary when we can travel again.

  • Made a “pilgrimage” to see this masterpiece from my temporary base in the the southern part of the Black Forest. In Autumn. It all fit and made a lasting memory. Thanks for the reminder and relatable narrative. If you are fortunate you can hear a concert as part of an international music festival in Colmar…at least once the world starts getting back to normal.
  • Your book is beautiful. Love the descriptions of each painting or sculpture. Highly recommend! Will be returning to it often. We saw this beautiful alterpiece in Colmar in 2019. Added bonus: it was in the process of restoration, so we were able to observe some of that!
  • I got to a little town of Riquewihr about 10 km from Colmar but couldn’t get a ride to see the Isenheim Altarpiece before the museum closed. Very disappointed as I have a copy of the Grunwald in my office. And the Great German composer Paul Hindemith was inspired by this altarpiece to compose an opera, Mathis der Maler (Mathias, the Painter) from which he later extracted a symphonic suite. Hindemith opposed the Nazi regime, came to America, and taught at Yale in his later years.

It has been many years since we saw this amazing and beautiful set of paintings. I recognized it immediately, because it is unforgettable! Rick has been our shining star this year. We can’t travel but we can go with Rick all over the world. Thank you Rick and PBS for all the past seasons.

Hope you see this. Just wanted to share. In 2005 I decided you made travel look so easy, that anyone could do it. I’d traveled with tour groups, and just friends before, but never alone. I bought one of your books on Italy and followed my bliss. Best trip I’ve ever taken. Did everything on my own schedule, my own interests, my own energy level.

Climbed steps to the top of the Duomo, went down slippery rocks into grottos, toured San Lorenzo’s crypt, went to the top of Giottos Bell Tower. No one complaining, no one whining. It was great. Your books have gotten me all over the world with a buddy or two. But a single female, traveling alone, can take your book, and arrive at a hotel, trattoria, or museum and know what to expect. I appreciate that. Knowledge is power.
