I love this. I think children need to learn the traditional way of doing math. It well help them in the long run when they are taking timed, standardized tests. I was homeschool already and my pupil learned very quickly how to carry the one. LOL. No common core in this house My students learn about the carrying and borrowing. I always talked about the regrouping aspect. Another thing they tell us is not to teach the algorithm. But I can’t not teach it.

I will say, I don’t know a LOT about common core, even though I’m going to school to become a teacher. But, in my math methods class that I’m in right now (this is the first of two I will take), it’s all about letting the kids solve problems in a way that works for them, not just memorizing steps from a teacher, and then having the student explain how they got their answer. This allows students to think critically, and use problem solving skills that I never did in school. I feel like it’s why I struggled with math my whole life because I was taught one way to solve a problem that doesn’t always work for everything, and instead of trying something different, I’d give up because it didn’t fit all the rules I was forced to memorize and use. In this class I’m discovering ways to solve problems I’ve never even heard of, that make more sense to me than anything I’ve ever known before. My hope is, that my future students won’t feel bound by a set of rules, but instead will have been introduced to multiple ways to start and finish problems that work for their individual learning styles, the problems their tasked to solve, and that in the end helps make them a successful college student, and citizen one day.
