I absolutely hate that this woman is using her “household name” status to pedal hate speech–especially as a renowned children’s author. Trans women are literally murdered because of this exact narrative, while cis women being attacked by trans women is, by and large, not an actual thing.

  • It’s like she doesn’t know her existing fanbase is/was mostly young adult liberals. Deeply disappointing, and harmful to boot. It’s strange to me that she ever had the success she did. I think I must be the only person in the world who thought the Harry Potter stuff was drivel. Thankfully I won’t be giving her any more money than I already have!
  • She was hateful in Harry Potter. It was just antisemitism, fatphobia, and subtle racism… She’s just been allowed to be less subtle by her perceived power and money. She’s vile.
  • For those who may need a little more context, this fictional murderer she has created is the embodiment of the straw man that anti-trans people use to create fear around trans women using women’s restrooms.

A straw man is a hypothetical argument with no basis in reality. In this case, it’s the notion that cisgender men will claim to be transgender in order to gain access to women’s’ spaces for nefarious purposes. It’s a straw man because there has never been a single documented case of this happening.

The fear it causes is real though, and there have been many cases of trans women being attacked in women’s restrooms. Moreover, according to the Human Rights Campaign, trans women in the U.S. have a 1 in 12 chance of being murdered, compared to 1 in 18,000 for cisgender people.

There’s a long history of transwomen, drag queens, and non-binary AMAB (assigned male at birth) people being depicted as killers in books and film. We can look at works created before the ’90s or even ’00s as products of their time, written by authors who didn’t know any better. This harmful trope doesn’t fly in 2020 though. Rowling has no excuse.
