crazy than an animal that big doesn’t seem to live that long, of course being endangered doesn’t help. I imagine its a lot tougher for sea turtles than it is for land tortoises, a lot more predators and tougher conditions that can do them in, plus they spend a lot more energy swimming all day and the energy it takes to climb up on land to reproduce.
- Tortoises live forever cause they take it slow, don’t do much and hibernate. Funny the way some animals have evolved to expend as little energy as possible, Joe Tornabene that’s right mate, scientists don’t have an exact figure when it comes to her lifespan but yes the numbers they have is somewhere between 30 and 50 years
- male leatherback never leave the ocean like some green turtles do in hawaii and just like you said females reach maturity around 16 years of age and normally come to lay egs every 2 or 3 years and when they do they do they it like 4 or 5 times with around a couple of weeks of interval in between postures…
- Unfortunately the ods are against them and only one in 1000 survive because of poaching, predators,pollution, gostnets… there’s a book that if I’m not wrong is called the lost years of turtles because in the first five years of they life no one’s knows really well what they do because they hide themselves because they are to small to fight with predators…
Leatherbacks are the most amazing turtles in the world, the biggest I saw was 1.74 metres long and around 1.20 metres wide, but they can easily reach 2 metres long. If you ever have the chance to volunteer in a turtle project (conservation project) do it mate because it’s gonna be the most amazing experience of your life…
I’ve done it 2 years ago, I went to Costa Rica and I’ve spent 3 months with a project called ASTOP Asociacion Salvemos las Tortugas de Parismina check them out they do a really good job protecting turtles and on that beach there’s 3 different species of turtles nesting, there’s the leatherback turtle, the green turtle and the hawksbill turtle.
Turtles are like parrots as long as they have no toxic en environment then they can go up to a couple centuries. Man pollution has reduced their growth drastically. Now the new Generation of turtles have many deficiencies that stop them growing to that level.
