For those who couldn’t get time off work to do it. Could you imagine if your nurse, babysitter, teacher, just walked away to vote, then had to sit in a line for 14 hrs to vote? In Canada, all schools are closed and the gyms are voting centers. Close to home. Plenty of places. And everyone knows where to go. No gerrymandering about less centers in low income or democratic areas.
  • what we are doing wrong is deliberate and active voter suppression. The GOP does not want everyone to vote. It is no accident that lines are much longer in the communities of color. yeah, you guys should have that checked out. Sounds like your democracy has an infection or something.
  • that’s why you should get the non-US version of democracy. Here in the nordic countries we don’t have that, neither as a feature nor a bug. It’s just not a thing. I wouldn’t take time off work, stand in a queue for hours, then take 30 minutes reading a poorly designed form to tick my choices.
  • I’m in New Zealand – no compulsory voting but still easy to do. I voted in the last election (a Saturday, always), walked straight in, showed the card they had sent me, grabbed a free pen, went into a booth, ticked my preferred options, sealed it, boxed it and left. 10 minutes during lunch hour.
In order for democracy to work we need to see start seeing 100% turnout for the elections, not 48-65% and in order to make that happen we need compulsory voting.  Still long lines, voting locations closed down in democratic regions, postal system disrupted. why the issues then?
we have early voting too in Canada but we still don’t wait in line for hours, never have I or anyone I’ve heard of, it’s in and out. And from the sounds or it many countries are the same, time for a revamp as the only one benefiting is the minority.
The early and mail in voting helped. I saw shorter lines in my area on election day. But there were still long lines for early voting. I stood in the rain for >an hour. In the UK we have most results in within hours and certainly within 24 hours. Yes I know we’re small compared to the US but the counting is done by humans and strangely it works. Voting by post is dead easy and the rules are of country wide.
At the moment there is no ID to be shown except in a few test cases and the queues are either tiny or non existent mainly because we have polling stations everywhere. There are two here for just 3000 ish flats. We always vote on a Thursday, it’s not a problem. A lot of other European countries vote on a Sunday.
