I’ll never forget when the man at the little wine shop in Venice handed us the wine glasses and said we could walk around drinking it. “You Americans keep your guns, we’ll keep our wine”. Yes, they don’t define freedom as a right to guns. Which civilized nation needs to carry a gun everyday ? We are actually way safer than the cowboy days. I was in Barcelona when a huge Protest was happening about the succession of the Catalonia. “Vota-em“ they were chanting by the 10’s of thousands, marching right outside our hotel room. We had no idea, we thought someone had a futball game on. Anyways we stepped out, walked towards the protesters and were met with some of the happiest, diverse protesters I’ve ever seen. Put our fear to rest. We’ve also been in BCN right after the vehicle attack where 13 people were killed and their police were everywhere armed to a tee. They weren’t scary, I was actually surprised at how normal it was but how professional they looked. The civility in both situations was eye opening. Rick Steves, thanks for this nice post about the first EU country that I got exposed to back in the late 1980s and revisited 4 times, the last about 11 years ago. My first when I worked on a project in Rotterdam, met literally very beautiful women, friendly and tolerant, and made the workplace fun to be at. Walking the compact city of Amsterdam was always a pleasure, day or night, and safe. The sights in the “red light” district are colorful and refreshing, the Rijk Museum is awesome, the canals and centuries-old homes and structures amazing.
The Dutch villages, towns, and other cities are charming, serene, and attractive places to explore. The flood control system comprised of centuries-old dikes, barriers, and locks are extremely impressive. The breakfast in hotels is something I looked forward to, the cheese at Gouda, the tulip fields, and the memories of the amazing beaches. Of course, their beer and brewery, and lastly, the diamond factory and showrooms.
A great starting point for drives and train rides to nearby Belgium and Germany. I feel the need to revisit.
