Of course you are correct….students must do certain things that do put them a higher risk. However, these young kids are also often highly social. Weren’t we all. There is some good news. Apparently pretty much all these cases are mild. So…the herd immunity is being being built. And…more good news….I read yesterday that a person’s immunity appears to last significantly longer than originally thought. My health concerns are for teachers and other University personnel. I think the kids will, by and large, be fine. Still….I feel sad for these young college students. Just cannot imagine what college feels like for them. Never…in all my 72 years…had I ever even imagined a global virus would change our world so radically. Cosmo Gibbs ummm it takes waaaay more than a few hundred positive kids to build herd immunity. Like 70% of the population. We’re not even close to that as a country much less one institution. The piss poor leadership came from the mostly Republican appointed Board of Governors. The administrators caved to the BOG. Actually I read an in-depth article that specifically mentioned when the overall infection rate reaches somewhere between 15% and 20%…..that herd immunity protection begins to kick in. Apparently that has been proven with other infections…and…all over the world. You are correct…we are not there yet…but we will…and must…get there. It is the healthy among us that have the potential to protect us. I, too, pray for all our kids and university employees as this virus continues to terrorize the world. I prefer nobody get sick; however, with the new information about prolonged immunity after recovery….for many of these kids…their infections will free them up to go back to normal lives. All that said….us older people MUST walk a real tight rope.
