A monster talent! I Saw AIC when they opened for Van Halen on the Poundcake tour at Blossom Music Center in Ohio. The crazy thing was it was an outdoor show, and it was a really hot day, I was struggling with the heat in just shorts and a t shirt, but Layne had like 4 layers of clothes on and he was clutching himself like he was freezing. He had on a t shirt, long sleeve shirt, flannel and what looked like a ski vest. He had to be dope sick, but His singing was amazing, on key, and with perfect pitch. Just an amazing performance and one that I will never forget.
I was a booking agent/band manager in those days, strictly small-time, but he must have found my card at The JamBox, because I got a long, rambling answering machine recording from him one time. He was pretty much a train wreck by then, and we all were flashing back to Andrew Wood, & nobody wanted to contend with him. He died shortly after that. I remember the first time I heard Alice in Chains – Man in a Box. It was then that I was sold. Damn, I miss Layne so much.
