the very act of travel is into self a political act. It’s impossible to “ignore politics”, plain and simple as it is part and parcel to every interaction of our daily lives. Food, sport, education, business, work. Politics touches ever bit of it in some way. By choosing to ignore that all you do is perpetuate the obtuseness that is toxic to marginalized people everywhere.
  • his statement isn’t made to alienate you. It’s meant to expose you to a different paradigm and hopefully challenge your own perceptions. Isn’t that what travel should do? Someone expressing an opinion you don’t also share doesn’t “alienate” you. Eyeroll. Must you live in a safe little bubble where everyone agrees with you?
  • Awesome, Amy, thank you! I tried to find it, but somehow when I typed in Rick Steves Europe it brought me back here. I have liked him for years – love rewatching old shows too! – but would love the Europe stuff. I will “like” that page too.
  • Again, I follow him for European travel suggestions, not politics. I was just curious as to whether or not I had the wrong page. If you must know, I am a Centrist, and I can see both sides. Your bubble comment was not only wrong, but not very nice. I do learn and read quite often about both sides of issues, but I look to RS for European travel. Sometimes it is nice to have other things to think about and discuss.
I really don’t want to be one of the quarter-million needlessly dead because some petulant sub-adults had to carry on about a non-existent threat to their freedom by just wearing a mask. Glad we could both express our opinions here.
Think about travel as your visit affects the communities you interact with instead. That really cute AirBNB you found in East London might be a really great Instagram picture but that’s one place not available to a local family in an increasingly gentrified neighborhood.
Those cute seashell souvenirs you picked up in Cabo for a few cents? More than likely they were made in China by people working for a fraction of that. The coral necklace you found in Montego Bay? Maybe that came from a reef decimated by over harvesting.
