The DES will use a four m telescope in Chile with a brand new digital camera that will peer deep into the southern sky and will map the distribution of 300 million galaxies over 5000 square levels (an eighth of the sky) out to a redshift of two. The five-12 months survey includes over a hundred scientists from the US, the UK, Brazil and Spain, and is due to begin in 2011.
