Channing believed that people could and will participate in their very own moral progress, striving toward perfection as a being created in the picture of God. He gave the middle class a religion that affirmed what they personally skilled: progress, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as a rational, sacred, and political right. Human nature was now considered as primarily sacred, perfectible, and moral.
