Several accessories are designed for the bass drum (also known as a “kick drum”). Ported tubes for bass drums are available to take advantage of a bass-reflex speaker design, where a tuned port (hole and tube is carefully measured) is placed in the cabinet to improve bass response at lowest frequency. Deep drum head patches are available to help protect the drum head from impact from the felt machine. The bass drum pillow is a cloth bag with filler or stuffing that is used to change the tone or resonance of the bass drum. A cheaper alternative to using a dedicated bass drum pillow is to use an old sleeping bag.
Some drummers wear special drum gloves to improve the grip of the stick as they play. Blank gloves usually have a textured clamping surface made of synthetic material, rubber and mesh or air vents on glove parts that are not used to hold the awl for a feeling of ventilation.
