During the 1920s, freelance drummers were hired to play at shows, concerts, theaters, clubs and dancers and musicians of various genres. Some of the drummers in the 1920s worked as artists. In silent films, an orchestra is hired to accompany the film and the drummer is responsible for providing all the sound effects. The drummers played musical instruments to mimic gunshots, airplanes flying overhead, a train going into the station and horses galloping, and so on.

Tracks from the 1920s have evidence that drummer drum kits began to evolve in size and sound to support the various behaviors mentioned above. However, by 1930, “talkies” (movies with sound) were more popular and included pre-recorded music. This technological breakthrough has left thousands of drummers taking the role of sound effects experts out of their jobs. A similar crisis was noticed by drummers in the 1980s, when electronic drums were first released.
