When it was first introduced in 1457, golf was considered an illegal sport. King James II of Scotland banned golf and soccer. Instead, he encouraged people to take the time to practice archery because this was really useful for the country.
This ban was formally implemented in 1471 by King James III, then King James IV in 1491. However, the Scottish royals’ hatred for the sport was gradually overshadowed. The world’s first female golfer was Mary Queen, from Scotland. Play rules
The oldest rule of golf was written in 1744 by the Edinburgh Golf Club. According to this rule, players will be required to play golf within the length of the hole. Then, the Richmond Golf Club continued to draft alternative rules during World War II so that players knew what to do if they lost mid game.
