The film marked a turning point in the life of the actor McQueen. At the end of the movie, McQueen is almost no longer racing and quit smoking completely. He is also not passionate about film projects anymore, as the producers do not want him to do the adventure chase scenes directly. After Le Mans was released, McQueen started collecting antique motorcycles. When he died in 1980, he had 138 motorcycles and 35 cars in the collection.
McQueen can be a very strict person in the way of doing things, especially when it comes to completing “Le Mans”. But throughout his life and career, he was rated as “honest and friendly”. McQueen was cast in “Le Mans” without a detailed script because he had what he wanted to do in mind. The documentary “Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans” tells about the will of a man to try to fulfill his dream on screen and what he is willing to sacrifice to do so.
