There are about 80,000 pairs of emperor penguins, or 160,000, living in the Ross Sea. Cape Washington has between 40,000 and 50,000 children. Coulman Island in Victoria Land has 44,000 children. Halley Bay, Coats Land has between 28,600 to 62,800 and Atka Bay at Queen Maud Land (32,000).
The emperor penguin is one of the things that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is most concerned about. Along with nine other species of penguins, it is being considered by the US for inclusion in the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Some of the main reasons emperor penguins lack food are due to climate change. The reasons for the decline in emperor penguins are disease, global warming.
