Skiing is also recorded in Norwegian mythology, including two deities, Ullr and the goddess Skaði— seen hunting on a skateboard. A Norwegian Sondre Norheim is considered the father of modern skiing. From the Telemark district of Morgedal, Norway, also known as the “cradle of skiing”, Norheim designed the prototypes that were the starting point for modern types of skiing. In 1850 a carpenter from Telemark introduced a thinner and lighter type of skateboard. These developments are accompanied by Norheim lanyard which fixes the heel with a stiff and flexible cord made of birch roots. This new way of mounting the board allows skiers to rotate, jump and turn as they slide down hills. These were known as “Osier” bindings.
