A research library contains resources for one or more disciplines. A research library that supports academic or scientific research and has both primary and secondary resources. A research library is usually an academic or national library, but a special library may also have its own research area, and some very large public libraries are also used for research. In North America, a large university library may also be considered a research library, and often belongs to the Association of Research Libraries. In the UK these may be part of the UK Research Library (RLUK).
A research library may or may not lend books. Some very large or old research libraries do not lend the same kind of reference libraries, while the majority of academic libraries in the UK and US allow books to be borrowed but not periodic publications and other materials. Some examples of research libraries include the British Library, the Bodleian Library at Oxford University and the New York Public Library main branch in Manhattan, the National Library of Public Science and Technology of Siberia’s branch.
