Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was born on January 26, 1955 in Amsterdam (Netherlands), to a family with Dutch father and Indonesian mother. Eddie’s father, Mr. Jan, is a professional clarinet and saxophone player, expecting his two sons – Eddie and Alex – to succeed and play classical music. Eddie was 7 years old, his family left the Netherlands for America. Settled in Pasadena (California), the whole family struggled. Eddie’s mother worked as a maid while dad was washing dishes at the restaurant. In elementary school, although English is still babbling, brothers Eddie and Alex still formed “band”. At first Eddie played the drums and Alex played the guitar, but then changed. Upon entering Pasadena City College, the cousins formed a new group, named “Mammoth” but later changed to “Van Halen”, “raging” mainly at student parties and some clubs …
