“The dog bone fossils at Newgrange preserve the most ancient DNA we’ve ever met, it provides an extremely good quality ancient genome that can be studied very closely.” “It’s not just a ‘card’ from the past, it’s a ‘great gift’ to us,” said Dan Bradley from Trinity College.
Bradley’s team, with the help of researchers from the Paris National Museum of History, worked together and analyzed DNA from 59 canine fossils dating back 3,000 to 14,000 years ago. Their genomes, including those from Newgrange, were compared with those from 2,500 past dog studies.
“Reconstructing the past from modern DNA is like opening a history book to read: you can’t tell which historical periods have been erased,” said lead researcher Laurent Frantz, “But on the other hand, ancient DNA samples are like a time machine, they give us a look into the past and see first-hand what happened.”
