The Thai Foundation for Biodiversity and Sustainable Agriculture (BIOTHAI) is committed to bring to light the NOIP’s advertising on eight cannabis-related patent applications. BIOTHAI cites the law any attempt to patent a cannabis extract will not be considered by the government. According to Thai law, herbal extracts are not considered intellectual property. Therefore, these patent applications can constitute law violations. Currently, many countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, Romania, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Canada, Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador, Israel, India, Australia … have legalized cannabis for medical and recreational purposes. In the US, California is the sixth state to allow recreational use of marijuana after more than 20 years of legalization in the medical field. Also in Laos organized a seminar on cannabis plants. Many businesses are lobbying for permission from the Lao Government for permission to grow cannabis in the provinces bordering our country such as: Xieng Khong, Kham Muon, Sa La Van, Á Ta Pu, and Cham Pa Sac. In the face of Thailand’s legalization of cannabis for medical purposes, how should we deal with this issue has posed many issues for the state management agency to answer. First, the trend of loosening regulations on the cultivation and processing of cannabis-based products in Southeast Asia, which is one of the global drug hot spots, will create new risks, leading to the control of drugs. Types of countries, including Vietnam, become more complicated. This issue also creates false subjective perception of people about their effects, leading to abuse. International drug crime lines will find ways to buy, sell and transport illegal marijuana into our country, thereby increasing the number of drug addicts and complicating the situation of drug abuse.
