The mermaid didn’t completely deceive the dead sailors, and sometimes they rescued the wrecked sailors. These sailors will then stay on the island to have children with mermaids and gradually turn into “Mermen” – mermaids. Because of this, women hate the mermaid for seducing their men. Medieval paintings showed that mermaids often carried a small hand mirror – a common item of prostitutes.
Other stories are mermaids who try to save people by dragging them into the water to bring them back to the mermaid’s world.
Sirens of Greek mythology later became known as mermaids in folklore although not all Sirens were mermaids, they could be a woman with bird wings. However, most of the stories and images today present Greek Siren in the form of mermaids. In fact, in some languages a word is used for both fish and birds, just like the Maltese language. with the word ‘sirena’. Other types of words related to mythical or mythical objects such as fairies or goddesses and sea dogs, are the creatures that are capable of skinning it to become human. According to Greek mythology, Siren are creatures with half human body and half bird and very amazing voice. Once, Goddess Hera organized a singing contest between Siren mermaid and 9 Muses goddesses – the goddesses of music who were the children of Zeus and the god of Mnemosyne. Unfortunately, Siren mermaids have lost and their feathers have been cleaned by the Muses to make clothes as a spoil. No feathers left, the Sirens could no longer fly. Sirens usually live on islands called Anthemoessa between Sicily and Italy.
Mermaids are also present in European myths with conflicting images – sometimes beautiful charming women like the goddess Atargatis, or evil monsters that always try to pull sailors into the deep sea.
