Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania in 2017 – next to Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia (and my darling Albania again). I applaud your travels and appreciation for the region!

  • We drove from Split to Mostar to Sarajevo to Kotor to Dubrovnik. It was an overall great experience, BiH has a lot to offer and is often overlooked by travelers, and the drive in northern BiH and Montenegro is just amazing.
  • One of my favorite side trips ever. The bridge jumpers were so amazing. This is Edi, he did a jump for us and took us into the turret on the end of the bridge to have tea with us. Here he is after the jump with our daughter. You can see how thrilled she is at his kindness.
  • My college town. It was destroyed during 1992-1995 agression and war, but it was rebuilted since then. Old Bridge is synonym for Mostar and jump from that bridge have been long time tradition. Rick, next time when you on route to visit Mostar, give me a call. There are so many places to visit in Mostar and around, that we can spend several days there.

Back in the old Yugoslav days,
I spent time traveling all over Bosnia, doing the research for my PhD. I still try to return every summer. It is frustrating that the train Zagreb-Sarajevo has yet to be reestablished.

Visiting Mostar with a RS tour is one of my most vivid memories. The winding road in, the stops along the way, then wandering through war-damaged areas to a mid-town cemetery that was once a park.

Seeing bullet pock-marks on walls of our balcony lent an even stronger sense of tragedy to our visit. Yet, as always, we felt welcomed by the those we met even though they tended to walk the streets unsmiling with their eyes down. Every destination is an opportunity for learning about the lives of others.
