I used to lead tours in Florence, and always recommend people stop in the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi to see the astonishing chapel. This is an especially good place to get a feel for the art of the Renaissance if you have only a few hours or can’t manage the walking in the Uffizi. It’s close to the Academia, too, so you can spend some time with David. We were fortunate to have been to Bacharach twice on two different Rick Steves Tours; GAS in 2004 and Best of Europe in 2007. We loved returning and the opportunity to visit with Herr Jung and walk his town with him. What a wonderful Ambassador for Bacharach and all of Europe but above all a true Gentleman!! RIP Herr Jung. This picture is from the 2014 Best of Europe tour I participated in. Herr Jung was such a great local tour guide and certainly a highlight of my trip. I was unaware he had passed. I wanted to share another photo of the Gothic Werner Chapel. Alas, unable to post more than one. One of the most interesting tour guides I met during a Rick Steve’s (Germany-Austria-Switzerland) trip to Bacharach, Germany in 2003 was Herr Jung. He vividly detailed his life as a young boy living through WWII. He described the nightly allied bombing raids as the Flying Fortress’s flew over Bacharach on their way to the industrial cities of Germany. We hiked up the hill side overlooking the Rhine to the grape vineyards that produced the world famous Rhine wines.It was a hillside filled with mud and shale that produce great tasting white wine. I picked up a small piece of shale and stuck it in my pocket. I still have it. We loved this town visit on the 21 day tour! We definitely remember the town tour with Herr Jung. He told us a story of his mother and a school lesson. The trip was truly amazing and has given us great memories!!
