So the cure is now proving to be worse than the disease. This was an often stated concern when this first started. Politicians simply have too much power if our system allows this to happen. And this is a big problem with prolonged societal isolation.. I acknowledge the seriousness of COVID19, it is a serious public health threat.. But if ultimately more people die because of the indirect effects of the virus, then of the virus itself, we essentially traded deaths for deaths.. or we added a greater number to the body count in the trade off. It’s not over. There will be a segment of people, just like in the 2009 recession, who will be out of work 1-2 years. Suicides will continue.  It’s somewhat insulting to our State Governors to describe the rise in suicide as ‘unintended’. The relationship between suicide and economic disruption is well known and the actual results track well with the model predictions. Every Governor has to have taken the rise in suicides into account in shutting down their states. Certainly, they didn’t enforce a lockdown so as to create a rise in suicides, but they did deliberately order a lockdown which they knew would kill hundreds through suicide (and more through domestic homicide). All the Governors are smart people, the science has been settled for a long time, they knew what to expect.  I think that you’re giving state governments too much credit. While there’s definitely a robust body of data, policy-makers are largely ignorant of it. Suicide prevention is routinely an afterthought, with scant funding and occasionally duplicative efforts that waste resources. Fun trivia: The Washington state Department of Veteran’s Affairs didn’t have a suicide prevention component of any kind until my organization successfully lobbied for it last year.
It consists of one person whose work was undermined by a ’governor’s challenge’ until that was deconflicted in November.
While you and I are aware of the severity, scale, and depth of the looming suicide/mental health/substance abuse/etc. problem, many in government likely never considered these issues as they responded to the pandemic.
