Rap: Similar to R&B and Hip Hop, Rap is no longer a new concept to music fans. Rap is understood as reading or saying words with melody. As the main material in Hip Hop, Rap can be performed in the background music or performed “vegetarian”, and is considered as an interference between speaking and singing. The concept of Vietnamese Rap was born in 1997, when two rappers Little Khanh and Thai Viet G introduced the song “Vietnamese Gang” and received much love from friends around the world. Over many years of development, up to now, Rap is increasingly popular and loved by Vietnamese audiences.
R&B (or RnB) stands for Rhythm and Blues, a music genre that dates back to the 1940s and primarily targets the African American community. People use R&B to refer to a specific genre of music every time: the early 1950s for blues, the mid-1950s for the blues with electronic blues, gospel and soul, 1970s for Soul and Funk. By the 1980s, a new genre of contemporary R&B was born, combining R&B, Soul, Funk, Pop, Hip Hop and Dance. Some of the most popular R&B stars in the world include Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, etc.
Dubstep was born in the 1990s in England, is a branch of electronic dance music (EDM). But unlike Trance, House, … Dubstep makes listeners extremely “excited” thanks to the bass and the drum is “heavy”. A Dubstep is usually divided into four parts (Intro – Bass drop – mid-section – outro), in which, the most prominent and characteristic feature is in the Bass drop section. This is the appropriate music for those with strong personalities. Having been in Vietnam for a while thanks to the underground world, however, Dupstep is widely known to Vietnamese people thanks to a “Bass drop” in the song. Song “Black and White” by My Tam. Although this piece of music later got plagued with plagiarism, it has partly made the audience learn and pay more attention to this new genre. Currently, Dubstep is no stranger to Vpop, many Vietnamese songs mixed with Dubstep, or Dubstep-style are extremely popular with the audience.
Hip Hop was born in the 1970s in the young African American community to move to the Bronx, New York. This is a genre of music often “dating” with Rap. When it comes to Hip Hop, people often refer to Hip Hop culture more than music. Hip hop music is one of the four main elements in Hip Hop culture, besides Rap, DJ, Breakdance and Graffiti. In Vietnam, Hip Hop was introduced in the early 1990s through Breakdance dances. Over many years of development, Hip Hop has now become a popular and favorite culture of many Vietnamese people.
