From those fights, the breed was given the name Pitbull. Pit here means to fight. Bulls are bulls. Pitbull means “one who dares to fight with bulls” (Vietnamese often call it Pitpull, Big bull, Pull or Bun).
In fact, Pitbull is not really the proper name of a dog breed. It is used to refer to dogs of similar appearance, sharing a common ancestor: American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The two American Pitbull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier can be considered as one. Only the American Staffordshire Terrier was bred and domesticated to be pets. The American Pitbull Terrier is trained to guard, guard, or make a fighting dog.
