Cats are good friends with seafarers, who need them on board to protect their luggage and food from rodents. More importantly, European sailors believe that black cats bring good luck to ships and promise a safe itinerary. If before the ship left the port the black cat jumped off the ship it was a bad omen and the sailors had to choose a different date and time for departure.
During World War I and World War II, many cats were attached to the navy, Russians often brought a black cat to the launch of a newly built ship and it would bring blessings.
