Some owners even hire special caregivers, tasked with caring for Akita dogs alone. Japanese people consider Akita a valuable treasure because not everyone can own them. By the 19th century, Emperor Taisho changed the law to make it possible for any citizen to own Akita Inu. This breed began to become more popular.
The first Uncle Akita left Japan in 1937
Hellen Keller is credited with being the first to bring Akita dogs to the United States. In 1937, Keller traveled with Japan to his friend. Here, she was listened and moved by the legendary story of the faithful dog Hachiko. Keller wishes to own an Akita dog like Hachiko. But she could not afford it until she returned home. Ichiro Ogasawara – a tour guide decided to give Keller his dog Akita named Kamikaze-Go.
Kamikaze-Go is considered to be the first Akita dog to reach the United States in 1937. Unfortunately, he died when he was just over 7 months old. The reason may be that the American habitat, food, and climatic conditions at that time did not really fit the Akita. After hearing the news, Ogasawara decided to send Kamikaze-Go’s younger brother Kanzen-Go to the United States to Keller. Prelude to the era of advancing American Akita.
