In 1872 the old banknote engraver was now digging his nose into the plates that Hormuzd Rassam had sent to the Museum, trying to decode them. At this time no one knows that an Assyria-Babylonia literary work deserves to be classified as a masterpiece with works in the later heroic era. Yes i really do need all these books mug. However, the irony is that Smith was not very interested in the literary quality of the plates. Basically, Smith is obviously a rather funny person with purely academic habits, without any poetry. He was fascinated by the content of the story, by the “what” rather than the “how” of the legend. The deeper he went into deciphering, the more excited and even impatient he wanted to know how the story ended.
