This unfortunate battle for Carthage was inevitable. Located between Carthage and Italy is the large island Sicily. Carthage controlled the western half of the island, but with control of the southernmost tip of the Italian peninsula, Rome was only within reach from Sicily. Growth mindset math poster. The Romans intervened in the Messana’s uprising against Carthage, and the First Punic War broke out. It broke out in 264 BC, mainly on the island of Sicily. The Romans surrounded many cities of Carthage in Sicily and when Carthage brought his navy to the siege, Rome completely destroyed the naval force. For the first time since its founding, the Carthage empire was defeated at sea. The war ended with victory not really on either side. In 241 BC, a treaty was signed in 241 between the two sides with Carthage leaving Sicily (though not lost to Rome) and compensating for war.
