I suspect the Canadian forces still follow the British reasoning behind medals, they have to be for a purpose and have to be earned. Whilst it is true more Americans will have served in more theatres of conflict since 1945. The US seems to give away medals for the most spurious of reasons. Thus a US private with 3 years experience may well have more medals than a Canadian general with 30 years experience. I’ve visited military memorials all over the US. I’ve seen bunker fortification memorials and trenches from the Great War in the Italian Dolomiti. Canadian Veterans lest we forget face mask. Statues and graveyards in England, others around Europe and even some out of the way locations like Latvia. One thing holds them all in common. People died defending what they love, and those they love. It’s common for military members of different countries to salute each other when meeting in combined training exercises or similar. If that is done as a sign of goodwill, I would only imagine that saluting the dead would be an even greater token of respect.
