Professor Peter Hotez, one of the ubiquitous TV presences during the pandemic, posted a thread on the electric Twitter machine that gave us all a look at how the anti-vax movement has allied itself with white supremacists and other elements of the crazy-ass Right. Apparently, the flying monkeys went aloft after Hotez called them out in an essay in Nature.
I have a long-standing disagreement with many of my US public-health colleagues. I admire their commitment to disease prevention, but when I ask for a more direct way to counter anti-vaccine aggression, I’m told, “that’s not our approach; confrontation gives them a platform and oxygen.” In my opinion, this attitude reflects a time when we had dial-up modems. Today, the anti-vaccine empire has hundreds of websites and perhaps 58 million followers on social media. The bad guys are winning, in part because health agencies either underestimate or deny the reach of anti-science forces, and are ill-equipped to counter it.…
Accurate, targeted counter-messaging from the global health community is important but insufficient, as is public pressure on social-media companies. The United Nations and the highest levels of governments must take direct, even confrontational, approaches with Russia, and move to dismantle anti-vaccine groups in the United States.
Passively ignoring the power of disinformation doesn’t work. What’s coming next, the general vaccination of American children, may well be an even bloodier fight. Fundamentally, public health is a public right. Anyone, from Russian ratfckers to Tucker Carlson, who actively works against it is working to deny civil liberties.
And Holy Mother Church isn’t entirely sane on the matter, either. From the National Catholic Reporter.
Though the Vatican and many U.S. Bishops have come out strongly in support of vaccination efforts, some Catholic groups oppose mandates. “Given the moral and medical concerns about the vaccines, and the plain fact that many Catholic schools and colleges have had in-person instruction without major problems, why violate freedom of conscience?” Patrick Reilly, president of the right-wing Cardinal Newman Society, told the National Catholic Register last month.
