There Aren’t Many Thing I Love More Than Being A Firefighter But One Of Them Is Being A Dad Shirt, hoodie

Numbers from the National Fire Protection Association for the 29,705 local and municipal fire departments in the country estimate that in 2018, only 93,700, or 8%, of the 1,115,000 firefighters in the United States were female.

More specifically, 15,200, or 4%, of career firefighters and 78,500 volunteer firefighters, or 11%, were women. In comparison, 13% of police officers or detectives were female and 21% of paramedics or EMTs were women. Police Chief Nicholas Caristo said the department is proud of the women who wear the uniform and protect the community.

“Women officers bring a valuable and necessary perspective to our service that benefits our residents, businesses and police department. I am always looking to bring more of that perspective and value into our police department family,” he said.

Pelayo’s colleague Kali Moss, 24, said the challenges of working in a mostly male-dominated field do not interfere with her ability to do her job.

“Women already go into policing having to work twice as hard to negate the stereotypes. Sometimes people think women aren’t as tough as men, but that isn’t true,” Moss said, adding women are often intuitive in solving many different issues that come with the job.

Moss’ love for law enforcement goes back to her days as a college student in New York City, where she attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in policing. She became a New York City Police Department cadet shortly after, while also being a U.S. Marshals Service intern.

“In 2018, I began my career as a police officer with the NYPD. Within six months of becoming an officer, I received the honor of being named ‘cop of the month,’” Moss said. “I’ve been lucky enough to have a lot of people who have mentored me.”

Moss acknowledges the higher number of male officers in the department, but said she’s not bothered by the opinions of others and that she “wants to be a positive female role model.”

Pursuing criminals may be challenging, but fighting fires and responding to medical emergencies is no less so, particularly for women. Lt. Angel Sronce, 29, describes it as “the best job in the world.”
