Something For Kate: “The Modern Medieval”
The experience of this band is evident from the first notes of the opening track, “All The Great Minds,” with its burnished tones and literate lyrics. And indeed this Australian band has been around since 1994 — though “The Modern Medieval” is only the second studio album from Something For Kate since 2006. It’s worth the wait.
The album covers a good deal of ground within a pop-tinged no-frills rock sound, with the hearty “Bluebird,” the brisk “Last Resort Town” and the driving and tuneful “Our Extinguished Colleague” among the strong rockers.
Something For Kate are also effective when they soften their sound a bit. “Situation Room” echoes the sadness of the lyrics with its winsome sound, while “Supercomputer” sounds far more organic and graceful than its title suggests. Having returned in fine form on “The Modern Medieval,” hopefully Something For Kate are ready now to pick up the pace in making new albums.
