Bento served us bread and olive oil while we started our wine day exploration with three red choices. I had the Caldaro, it was light, fruity and easy on the taste-buds. Compton tried a “Carmine’s” favorite, the Drumheller. It was a Merlot from Columbia Valley, Washington that she described as mellow, soft and a “perfect treat for a wine lover.” Lugtu had the Quecerto di Castellini, from Toscano, Italy. She said it was dry, peppery and bitter — which is her preferred taste.
The restaurant’s intriguing indoor rustic atmosphere features a bright solarium-like room with large windows and a door that leads out onto an artsy twinkle-lit patio.
Glass #2: Meimo, Pinot Noir, Sanoma, California
I tried the Rigatoni alla Vodka with house made meatballs. Boy, did it not disappoint! Bento suggested pairing it with the Meimo — a great call. The pinot enhanced the already delectable flavors from the vodka sauce. And the soft meatballs melt in your mouth. It was Italian heaven.
Compton ordered the New York sirloin and Lugtu ordered the Frutti di Mare: pan-seared scallop, shrimp, braised littlenecks, P.E.I. Mussels and calamari in a spicy San Marzano marinara sauce tossed with tagliatelle pasta. Lugtu described her dish as full of mind-blowing flavors.
After enjoying a superb Italian dinner, it was time to jump to our next destination. We decided to try the wine flights and charcuterie at the newly opened wine and whiskey library in Marion.

Opened in December, this wine- and whiskey-lovers escape is made for future sommeliers or wine-tasters who want an opportunity to introduce their pallets to something new.
Inside has a speakeasy-vibe with “roaring ’20s” music and outside is furnished with aged whiskey-barrel tables. “We believe in giving an experience rather than service,” said General Manager Solena Morris. “We’re going to gauge your level of knowledge in terms of whiskey and wine, and kind of go from there in terms of what you need from us.”
Morris grew up in Fairhaven and worked in local restaurants before moving to Austin, Texas. After 10 years she moved back just before the pandemic and said when she walked into “the library” she immediately knew it was a perfect fit.
