Meanwhile, a 3-K class gathered outside to plant and water sunflower seeds. In the distance, older students practiced “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” during a music class outdoors.
High school students took out their notebooks and laptops to learn European history outside during their Advanced Placement course. During their prep periods, some students worked on group projects and socialized, while others caught up on schoolwork. A high school student and his teacher were heard discussing the Persian war while sitting on bleachers adjacent to the school’s baseball field. Walking through the hallway, another high schooler challenged their teacher to a game of chess.
“With days like this, teachers would go outside all the time and say, ‘Let’s go sit outside it’s nice.’ It’s not uncommon,” Corigliano said.
Seniors are also donning sweatshirts and t-shirts on campus to indicate where they chose to go to college in the fall. Picking a college was harder than usual for seniors, Corigliano explained, as students typically would visit colleges they applied to before making their final decision.
“We’ve had a lot of college acceptances, but visits have been hard,” she said. “Luckily, college guidance begins in ninth grade. To get a sense of, ‘Do I want to go to college in a rural school…,’ or do I want to go in the city and take a bus to campus.’ We say, “You’re going on vacation, go visit a school while you’re there.’ So they’ve visited a lot of colleges.”
