For the fourth year in a row, Aurora will show its colors during LGBTQ Pride Month, but not with the kind of festive downtown parade that made history in 2018 and was successfully repeated the following year.
The COVID-19 pandemic, of course, took a bite out of that Aurora Pride Parade momentum when the event had to be canceled last June.
Although things are starting to open up and we are seeing more live events, there’s no question there’s still hesitation, still concerns about large, fun, exuberant gatherings.
Which are words that definitely describe this local parade.
Even though Mayor Richard Irvin recently announced the city will go ahead with a Fourth of July parade, the decision to cancel the June Pride Parade in Aurora “was the right one,” said Gwyn Ciesla, president of Aurora Pride.
That’s why Ciesla and members of Indivisible Aurora, which planned the past parades and is a sister organization of Aurora Pride, are OK with yet another socially-distanced event.
The Pride Drive on June 13 may not be as much fun as a parade, but it still allows residents of this city to show support for the local LGBTQ community by decorating their churches, businesses and homes.
The deadline to get on the official map for this drive-by event is past. But that doesn’t mean you can’t go to aurorapride.Org once the route is posted and hop in your vehicle to check out the sites that are scattered across the city’s East and West sides.
