Explaining: ‘I think before maybe you couldn’t really get in touch with people like the way that people think that you can on social media but again the date is really showing that it doesn’t matter who you are or how much you make, what access you have, the effects are still the same. People are feeling depressed and people are struggling because of how much people are sort of throwing at them through social media. People need to know what have you done that has helped you to navigate this because social media is going to be here.’
Hailey said not going on Instagram Monday through Friday was important because ‘I was getting to the point that I was going to open my Instagram for like no reason it was like reflex.’
Other things that have helped her mental health has been turning off comments: ‘I turned off the comments on my page except for people that i follow. When I look at my comments now when I put up a photo or video or anything, I know its only going to be people that I know are only going to be positive and only going to be encouraging and uplifting. And also therapy has helped me a lot.;
In why therapy has been helpful, she said: ‘Having somebody to be that outside person to help me dissect the real world and be like “ok your talking about something that really only exists on your screen.”‘
Justin has helped her a lot as well: ‘I really have to give him credit because he’s been doing this so much longer at this really massive level. So I think I’ve gone through a phase of “I get it yeah yeah I don’t want to hear it” and I do it and he’s like “I told you its just way better.” Life is way better this way and he was so entirely right.’
On the commenting element, Dr. Clemons said: ‘I think it reflects on what people should do in their real lives not just on social media. But be thoughtful. If you have someone who wants to hang out with you but they are constantly saying rude or negative things, my hope it that you would cut them off or have a conversation and say maybe you don’t need this amount of access.’
