They were the height of fashion in the late seventies, but now the long-forgotten leggings are threatening to make a comeback.

Femail asked two writers whether they’re gagging to don a pair or saying goodbye for good.

  • Yes, says Fiona McIntoshAmong the micro minis, neon-bright coats and tweed suits now filling the High Street stores for autumn is a fashion horror that will redden the cheeks of anyone over 35.

It was the one item in your Eighties wardrobe that you vowed you’d never wear again.

Now, after nearly 20 years in style exile, leggings are about to enjoy another fashion moment.

This news is at once thrilling and horrifying. It is like bumping into an old flame you once adored but sadly grew to loathe because of his bad habits.

It all began back in the late Seventies with the film Grease. In the grand finale, Olivia Newton-John wore a pair of black spandex leggings so tight she had to be sewn into them.

At a time when baggy cowboy jeans and androgynous dungarees were at the height of teen cool, this new, pencil-thin silhouette became the sexiest thing since Simon Le Bon.

My favourite leggings were electric blue, which I teamed with a baggy sweatshirt to affect the Kids From Fame look.

But I also had them in bubblegum pink and several varieties of black. I wore them everywhere. Even in bed.
