On the first day of filming for The 39 Steps in 1935, two main actors of Hitchcock, Madeleine Carroll and Robert Donat, came to the set with a little stress. That day they will play one of the intricate scenes of the film: the two strangers, however, were handcuffed together before, and still handcuffed, forced to run through rural Scotland (in fact a scene) to escape from the criminals. Hitchcock gave no real indication of how he wanted them to act. Carroll in particular is very bored with the director’s manner. Lord of the sloths parody poster. This British actress, one of the most elegant movie stars of her time, spent most of her career in Hollywood, where directors treated her like a queen.
