Many don’t have much of an option. In our area, the biggest employers are oil and gas. Well, oil and gas is tanking, businesses are trying to recoup losses, and the only positions available are TEMP (3-6 months) in grocery retail, which pays minimum wage. Minimum wage isn’t enough to support a family, and again – TEMP. My grocery clerk daughter is making less while being at risk, than her laid-off counterpart who might have worked as a clerk in a clothing store. How’s that for incentive. maybe the federal government should reduce the amount they are giving to the laid off workers and give that money to the essential workers instead rewarding them for being on the frontlines. raise the minimum wage too much and people get laid off. Fewer people working and these are entry level low skill jobs. I dunno, but not everybody is going to be a lawyer or a nurse. Some people are going to be grocery workers and clerks. No one should expect to get rich, but a living wage used to be a thing paid to workers and executive salaries did not use to be 300 x the salary of their employees. not for minimum wage low skill jobs. If you can’t learn a skill then you need to live with your parents for the rest of your life. The problem is there used to be factory jobs that people could get to support a family. The trades desperately need young people as a majority working in those fields are retiring. Don’t compare grocery clerks to skilled trades or even people doing hard physical labor. In our area, warehouse workers make good money. So you think grocery store managers, purchasing agents, supply clerks and department supervisors are unskilled labor that doesn’t deserve a living wage to support a family.
